Outrun was released in 1986 as an arcade racer. It was one of the best selling arcade machines of the 1980s. it achieved a game of the year award in 1987 the same year it was released for the Sega master system.

now this game is interesting for being one of the first arcade racing games to give players choice, that is what song they listen to and what paths they take.

the games objective is to reach one of 5 goals by taking a number of different paths and avoiding roadside obstacles and traffic on the road. these paths come toward the end of each stage forcing the player to choose either left or right. each of these paths have different scenery and differing difficulties of turns. the player is driving against the clock to reach the checkpoints at the start of each stage.

if the player reaches the objective or runs out of time the game will show what paths they took and in the case of running out of time where they got to on the course. And of course for many of these early arcade port games a high score screen so players could leave their mark on the game.

this game is one of the greatest racing games out there. It has been re-released on a number of different consoles and was last released on the Nintendo 3ds.
