Welcome to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom is made up of four regions England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The country was formed over time by a number of treaties.  An act of union between the kingdom of England and Wales in 1536.  Later after many years sharing the same monarchs the governments of the separate kingdoms of England and Scotland signed the act of union in 1707 forming the kingdom of Great Britain.  Nearly a Century later in 1800 another act of union was signed between Britain  and Ireland forming the United kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.  This country lasted for just over a century until 1922 when the south of Ireland became a separate new entity.  This left the north of Ireland as part of the UK leaving its name in its current state.

Over the years Britain has used a single currency the pound.  Since 1971 the pound was set to a decimal system that is 100 pennies to the pound.  Before this the system the pound was divided up with 240 pennies to the pound.  This is due to the Weight value of a silver penny from medieval times being   one 240th of a troy pound of silver.

The two systems are made up of various different denominations of coinage which we will look at separately.
